Dear fellow PVARC members,
International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend had excellent weather at Pt. Vicente this year with 59 people attending our family picnic on Sunday. We are very thankful for our members help with setup, cleanup, supplying tables/chairs, canopies, and side dishes that combined to make the picnic a fun event. From the radio operation side we made 241 contacts--mostly on 20 meters and some on 40 meters...HF band conditions were less than ideal. This year 418 lighthouses worldwide registered for Lighthouse Weekend besides K6PV but we were only able to contact nine of them. I would like to especially thank Bob Closson, W6HIP, for his work with the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary that enabled us to use Pt. Vicente Lighthouse.
Our next monthly meeting at Hesse Park is Thursday, September 5, when a team of PVARC members presents "Understanding DMR (Digital Mobile Radio)." If you were confused until now about DMR our presenters hope to clarify what you need to know about DMR's key concepts.
The PVARC's weekly nets on the K6PV repeater are tonight at 7:30 pm for the analog net (447.120 MHz, Tone Squelch, PL 100.0...with a 2-meter cross-band link for those on the Peninsula's west side using 144.910 MHz, Tone Squelch, PL 156.7); then at 8:00 pm it's our weekly DMR net which often runs to 8:40 pm with a roundtable discussion. Please say hello on either or both nets.
Lastly, it's worth noting that some PVARC activities become known to other amateur radio groups in Southern California. Tomorrow night the Santa Clarita Amateur Radio Club monthly meeting will be seeing the video of our 2019 Islands On The Air DXpedition to Two Harbors on Catalina Island. On July 5 I showed this video at the Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach monthly meeting...and shortly after the video ended the Red Cross building there began rolling for nearly a minute with the magnitude 7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake. Not quite the ending we hoped for but another reminder to all for earthquake readiness.
Have a great week and 73 to all,
Diana, AI6DF
